Comparison of Design

For my design comparison, I have chosen to compare the greatest tool ever invented for women, mascara. The reason why I have chosen mascara is simply because a women will decided what mascara she chooses based solely on the design principles of the packaging. A woman is unable to take out the actual product and test it before she makes the purchase. The mascara of her choice is based off the appeal of the design elements.

The two mascaras that I found to be close in design relationship, but totally different in design appeal is Covergirl lashblast Luxe mascara and Maybelline New York The Colossal Volum’ Express mascara.

For me personally, I like the cleanness design of Covergirl’s lashblast Luxe mascara. It may not be the attention grabber out of the bunch, unlike the other one, but it draws me in. The fact that I can see the brush helps me to factor in the application of the mascara to my eye lashes. The Maybelline’s mascara design only shows a graphic image of the brush.
The Covergirl’s mascara design is well balanced. The reaction to that design is softer unlike the reaction to the Maybelline’s mascara. When looking at the Maybelline’s mascara, I had a hard time trying to focus on a particular part of the design. The contrast principles used for each packaging design is completely different. The purple and yellow color scheme of the Maybelline’s mascara felt a bit overwhelming at first glance. You have the tube of mascara that is bright yellow and the purple background with bright yellow writing. For myself, I think there are too many different font sizes for the Maybelline design. It goes from big to tiny in random areas of the design, which is another reason it is hard for my eye to focus on certain area. Too much is going on in such a small area! As for the Covergirl’s contrast principles, the presentation of the product is much calmer. You have a white background with faint, but still vivid, writing with a bright pink mascara tube. The Covergirl’s design concept uses lighter colors so that the product mascara tube is what catches your eye first. The Covergirl design seems effortless compared to the Maybelline design.
The noise relation to both of these mascara products was quite different. When choosing the Covergirl mascara I didn’t have much thought. Its packaging is clear and simple, unlike the Maybelline packaging. The Maybelline packaging made me confused. I could not clearly tell if the product was waterproof or not. I had to turn it over and read about the product to make a clear assessment. I also had a hard time trying to find the color of the mascara. On almost all mascara products it is in the upper right had corner except this one. The color indicator of the mascara is at the bottom of the packaging. Overall it was very frustrating and confusing.
What mascara would you perfer?????
